Industrialist Benjamin Franklin Mebane bought 600 acres of land near Leaksville, North Carolina in 1893.  He built textile mills on the land, but the 1910 recession forced him to sell his mills to Chicago based Marshall Field and Company. The new Fieldcrest Mills continued to expand with state of the art equipment until the first mass-produced oriental rugs were created in this sleepy little southern town. Karastan Rugs were born April 8, 1928, and the world saw the best machine-made area rugs ever made. These remarkable reproductions of handmade oriental rugs were indistinguishable from the imported originals, and soon became known as "The Wonder Rug of America."
